Virtual reality is a roleplay site about, as the name suggests, a virtual universe. In the not to distant future scientists created a high tech video game called The Game. The Game was not originally called the Game, but when the war broke out, everyone forgot what the real name was, and it was referred to as the Game. Not long after they developed another version. They made it for fun, but over time it has become dangerous. The Government has banned the game from being used, except by the military for training, but a resistance has arisen and gotten possession of the game. The Rebellion is fighting the tyrannical Government to regain rights for civilians and to free the world of cruel leaders. Little does anyone know, but the game is still used for fun on another planet colonized by Earth, but has long since been forgotten. A rebellion is in its infant stages on the world of Zeme, will it be able to bring down the Vlad from its remote base, or will it fail to grow? Will the resistance be able to crush the Vlad and help the Rebellion on Earth, and free the people of Zeme of the tyrannical government? Will the people on Zeme discover the war going on in their beloved game or will they remain ignorant? Will the resistance bring down the Vlad, or will the Vlad prevail and punish the rebels and their sympathizers?
Obviously you've noticed the involuntary change pushed on us. Sadly this meant I had to rework all of the coding. That unfortunately led to us restarting out money count. There will be little change until I can figure out more about this new system. I will still manually take the money from your account when you purchase something. As of now you will only receive 1 penny from posting and exalting will give none. There is also a bank with a 1.5% interest that you can deposit money into. It is found at the bottom left of the screen. There is a stock market there temporarily, but I will likely remove it soon. There is also a possibility of us adding jobs soon with wages.
Lilly spoke quietly with herself, simply not willing to relish the silence she had now. Entering the Fields of Fire, she paused looking out at it. "Been awhile since we met." Lilly said aloud, not caring if anyone heard. She usually tried to avoid the place, not being a fan of it or what lay beyond. Boredom did wondrous things.
Dyer's yell hit her ears.
Lilly frowned, "who the hell..." She couldn't help hesitating before she set off at a jog toward the sound. She pulled the knife back out of its steath, knowing she probably wouldn't be any help but... Just to be safe.
As Lilly neared the bush that concealed the group, she pulled a smaller knife. Shifting it in her hand to throw it.
Dyer got to his feet and felt his head, making sure there were no burnt bits. Feeling none he looked at Fortis. He didn't recognize the character but could tell by the man's gear that he was a veteran of the Game.
"Yeah, they were certainly bold bandits," Dyer said, pulling the knife out of the thief's back. "Thanks for the help."
Eyes glanced over the dead bodies on the ground before they went to the two live men. Lilly studied them both before speaking, "you okay there boys?" She pushed both knives back into their sheathes. "Heard someone scream, though I'm guessing it was one of them?"
She didn't get any closer than she felt the need to, it was dangerous being a thief and she would've rather not ended up in jail, or on the receiving end of a noose.
Suddenly self conscious, Lilly made sure that the dagger she had stolen earlier was hidden. Could've put it in a better spot I could have. She grumbled the words to herself in her head, cursing her stupidity. Forcing herself to stay composed, Lilly looked between the two men, watching for any movement, hostile or not towards her.
Dyer looked at Lilly. He noted the glow around her, indicating a Resistance member. It took him a moment to recognize his general. With a glance at Fortis he decided against showing any recognition. "Yes, it was the one with the hole in his back. I would never scream like that."
He looked at Fortis, daring the other man to argue. He didn't want to show any weakness to his general. Or to anyone. He had a reputation to uphold.
Fortis looked at the newcomer with caution. He made it a rule not to trust anyone in the Game, but that said, the man looked honest and he was a good fighter. But the lone traveler who just came upon them should definitely be treated with care. One doesn't travel the Fields of Fire alone unless they are a fighter or have a trick or two up their sleeves.
When the man commented about the yell, and dared him to reply, Fortis smiled internally. Instead of responding, Fortis just shifted his weight in case of an attack from either character. He needed to get a move on if he was to be productive.
"Well, I think that we've been here long enough," Fortis decided. "More bad guys or monsters will be here soon. And we are in a bad position. I am heading to Metroid. If you want to tag along, I would appreciate the company."
After saying thus, Fortis nodded his head and turned towards his destination. He kept an eye and an ear out for more hostiles, both from behind and ahead.
Dyer looked over the man before him as the proposition was put out there. There was nothing to indicate that the man meant any harm, but he never trusted anyone. Even his general he was cautious toward. He had been betrayed one too many times in his life. Now he was self-sufficient, only using people when it made things easier, but he always had a plan if they let him down.
When Fortis had his back to them Dyer shot a cautious look at Lilly. Two high ranking rebels infiltrating a Vlad-held city together was risky. He wouldn't stop her, but he would not encourage it either. Without a word to his comrade he followed Fortis across the Fields. When he caught up he spoke, "I'd rather not run into another situation like that. I think I'll take you up on your offer."
Lilly looked between Dyer and Fortis, she could almost sense how Dyer felt. She shrugged a little, "I prefer to go it alone, but I don't mind accompanying you to the edge of the city only. If you don't mind." She looked at the bodies again, "I'd probably be in trouble of I met any of them."
Lilly looked around the Fields of Fire, one hand dropping to a knife at her hip. Her eyes paused on Fortis' back, watching him with caution. She didn't know what to think of the other man, he was obviously a good fighter. Let's not try to tangle with him. She thought, eyes going to the fields around them again.
Strangely, Fortis was grateful that the strangers decided to accompany him. He even hoped that they might not need neutralizing. But if they did become a threat, well as the old saying goes: "keep your friends close and your enemies closer."
Fortis had had very few friends while Amicus was alive, but after his friend's heroic death, Fortis had pushed everyone away. He still cared for his men, but that was work, his psychologist said Fortis needed friends. Maybe these strangers could become friends? No, he had no time for others until the Resistance was crushed, destroyed and but a faint memory. Only then could he enjoy the luxury of friendships.
Even though he wanted peace, Fortis was still prepared for an attack. He kept his hands near his weapons just in case. Fortis noticed the others doing the same as well. They were as cautious as him. He wondered who these characters were. Then a thought hit him.
"If we are going to be companions, albeit temporary ones. We should know what to call each other. Otherwise I will need to create nicknames, and I am bad at nicknames," he jested.
The jokes would keep them occupied so Fortis could better focus on his plan and surroundings. Once he traveled to Metroid, he would have to be productive, the time for indulging in an adventure will be over. Maybe I will meet the Vlad officials there and see where the biggest problems so I find a good starting place. But there is still time for planning.
Dyer walked in silence behind Fortis. The other man was clearly thinking hard and not focusing on his jokes. This struck Dyer as odd, but he dismissed it in favor of thinking up an answer to the man's question. He would not give his real name until he learned more about his companion, if ever.
Within a couple of seconds he gave out a false name, "The name's Daniel." He glanced at Lilly, looking for a reaction in her eyes.
A hint of surprise crossed Lilly's face as Dyer lied, but she quickly shrugged it away. Lilly hesitated for half a second, "name's Kylin." The lie slipped smoothly from her mouth, it wasn't exactly new, either was the name. She preferred to keep her identity hidden from mostly everyone. It was just better that way, there was no power in a fake name.
"Give a nickname if you want, I probably won't reply." She shrugged and inspected the back of her hand for a few seconds before looking around them again, having no idea why she was so edgy. Monsters normally don't scare you, what's your problem? She scolded herself mentally, he isn't going to go looking for the knife and if he does. It's a family heirloom. Okay? She shook negative thoughts from her head and focused ahead of them.
Fortis smiled to himself. Because of the slight delay and the answers, the names were obviously fake. Only fools or novices to the Game give away their real character names. These names probably were either similar to their character names or used often. Fortis expected both were the case here.
These two were clearly experienced players. Good. Fortis knew that there was nothing worse than having a fool or a novice watching your back, although experienced players may put a knife in it. He knew it always pays to watch your back.
"Nice to meet ya," Fortis called over his shoulder. "Y'all can call me Virtus."
Lilly let her eyes settle on Fortis' back, she almost didn't speak but forced a few words out. "Nice to meet the two of you as well." Her eyes narrowed a bit, the name he gave obviously wasn't his own, but she didn't have room to talk did she?
Lilly pulled on of her smaller knives, twirling it in her hand as she walked glancing around them now and again. She couldn't help being a little fidgety though, they were headed into enemy territory with almost no idea what they were going into.
Dyer nodded to the two of them, "Nice to meet you both." He knew the name Lilly used, he knew every alias of every member in the resistance, but he could also tell the name Fortis gave was a fake. He had expected a fake name, but the name given surprised him. His first thought was the similarity to the name of the main man on his mind, the man he most wanted to kill. He quickly pushed the idea out of his head, thinking that Fortis couldn't be the helpful man next to him.
The first warning that Dyer had of the attack was just a vague feeling that they were being watched. He ignored it at first, you were always being watched by something on the Fields of Fire. With three skilled fighters it was unlikely that whatever was watching would attack.
A couple minutes later he figured out the error in his logic. As the sound of hooves hitting he soft ground reached his ears he corrected himself. It was unlikely that whatever was watching would attack...unless there were twenty of them and they were on horseback.
Within seconds the trio was surrounded by the group of obviously well-trained and well-organized horsemen. None of the attackers said anything as their eyes scanned the trapped group through eyes hidden by fancy helmets.
One side of the entrapping circle opened and another man, the leader Dyer thought based on his extra-fancy armor and weapons and his aura of power, came through on a large white steed. "What have we here? Three companions walking around the Fields of Fire unprepared for an attack? When I first saw you I thought you would be smarter."
Dyer recognized the voice. His suspicion on the man's identity was confirmed when the helmet was removed. This group was responsible for more raids in the Game on Resistance positions than the Vlad. This group had more control than Dyer's enemy in the medieval portion of the Game and abused it. They were on neither side and had no loyalty and this made them even more dangerous.
Without thinking Dyer rushed the man. Before he took three steps one of the other attackers flew off his horse and tackled Dyer to the ground. A knife was place at his throat.
"If either of you two try anything like that he will die first, then you," the leader said, looking from Fortis to Lilly.
Lilly turned, pulling her other knife as she did, watching the horsemen. She almost stepped to Dyer's defense before gritting her teeth and moving back a step. Her eyes stayed locked on the leader of the group, forcing herself to not let hatred show, not a lot of it anyways.
Her grip on the knives tightened as her fingers itched to throw them, nothing good is going to come out of getting yourself killed. Calm down. She kept her mouth shut, knowing that mouthing off to the man probably wouldn't be the best decision either.
Fortis groaned internally. He should have known better than to not act on his instincts. He knew he had to think of something but he couldn't. He was running out of options. Keeping his hands near his weapons, Fortis decided to bluff.
"If he dies, so will you."
Fortis reached under his cloak to make the impression that he was grabbing something. All the men tensed.
"Even without this potion, I could kill you and a half-dozen of your minions before you killed me," Fortis threatened.
"What is your secret potion?" Asked the leader.
"Only a firebomb," replied Fortis.
The firebomb, everyone knew, was likely the most dangerous potion in the Medieval portion of the Game. Nothing in a 20 yard radius escapes the unquenchable flames. Which was fitting if one considered the group was still in the Fields of Fire.
However Fortis didn't have a firebomb, and his bluff wouldn't last long.
